I don’t remember much about the first time I met Madiba, only his smile and the smiles of everyone else when they were around him.
I remember learning about him and how he spent all that time in Robben Island; I visited the jail, walked into his cell and heard the horror stories of what happened to the inmates. I expected him to be angry or standoffish. But he was warm, very old, but warm all the same. He had a kindness that is always present every time I see him.
The second time I saw Madiba is more memorable than the first: it was at my grandparent’s 50th wedding anniversary, I was about eight years old and right after communion I went and gave him a hug. He hugged me back, shook my hand and I remember telling my dad that, “I won’t wash this hand for the rest of forever”.
