For the institution and staff of the Nelson Mandela Museum, in Mthatha and Qunu, visits by our founder were always special occasions, indeed. They underscored Mr Mandela's humility and humanity, and tangibly reinforced our responsibilities as a national heritage institution bearing his name.
On the day that this photograph was taken, in Qunu, Mr Mandela and Mrs Machel had come to view a new exhibition of letters written by children to Mr Mandela and United States human rights activist Rosa Parks.
Although we had been briefed that the visit would be of relatively short duration, he nonetheless took the opportunity to greet us all individually.
I was overwhelmed and almost pinched myself, l could not believe that l was actually shaking his hand and talking to Madiba. He had this peaceful look with plump and clear skin, a warm voice full of love and visible appreciation of our work that was reassuring, deeply inspirational and gave me hope.
As I have lived my life promoting his values at work and outside work to inspire people, l knew at this moment that l was on the right track. l felt so inspired, and vowed to die preserving his legacy, promoting his values and following in his footprints.
