On the 9th of May 1996, Madiba came to Beacon Hill High in Mitchells Plain to inaugurate our newly renovated school. There was such an amazing atmosphere, people were lining the streets, and unfortunately there were anti-ANC (African National Congress) supporters at the gate. But what did Madiba do? He got out of his car and he went to talk to them. They were amazed at this awesome man.
As Madiba was leaving and I was escorting him to his car, I got a call from my mother to invite the President of South Africa to our house for tea. Well, being a good daughter, I did what I was told. Madiba said his secretary would call me and we’d set up an appointment.
The 18th May 1996, I’ll never forget that date! The road was filled with people. Everywhere people were hanging over walls. I think some people were even sitting on their rooftops to catch a glimpse of the awesome Nelson Mandela.
Madiba arrived, and wow! It was so exciting, really, truly exciting for him to come to Elsies River. Who would have thought the President of the country would be in my house. He came to meet my parents, my brothers, aunts, uncles, cousins, and my grandmother. Well my grandmother was another story. She is the same age as Mr Mandela, and was an NP (National Party) supporter, but this occasion was just momentous for her. She became an ANC supporter after that.
Quote: "She became an ANC supporter after that."
